AJP, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Social Responsibility Committee (SRC) held a letter delivery on February 2, 2024 for collective letters from students and alumni about the ongoing crisis in Palestine accompanied by fresh flowers dedicated to different sectors of the Palestinian community and words from students and alumni on how institutions have a critical responsibility to speak up against genocide. Despite the gravity of the letters’ contents, emotions exhibited by its community, and global events since receiving the letters, Drew’s administration has maintained complete silence on Palestine.
We are calling on Drew University’s administration to rectify this utter lack of conscience. Our collective, the Drew Alumni for Justice in Palestine demands the following actions:
- Drew University must leverage its influence to condemn all loss of life and advocate for an immediate and permanent ceasefire;
- Divest Drew University’s endowment from any company that profits from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land;
- Protect students’ rights to express and associate by supporting Drew University’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and consider & approve SJP’s events in a timely manner;
- Acknowledge the longstanding and historical oppression of the Palestinian people;
- Create more resources for Arab, Palestinian, and Muslim students;
- Initiate a conversation among administration, students, and faculty about divestment.
Divestment Guide – May 2024
Drew University has been avoiding disclosing any information regarding any investment of its endowment in companies profiting from Israel’s occupation, apartheid, and genocide in Palestine. Instead of donating to Drew, the AJP encourages alumni to divest their money from university events, like the upcoming alumni reunion on June 7-8, and redirect their support to organizations doing important work on the ground. Below are a few accredited organizations directly assisting the Palestinian people. If able, please consider donating to these organizations and if you are unable to support financially, please continue to spread the word about these wonderful organizations and their missions to help the people of Palestine.
- Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) 𖤓 www.pcrf.net
PCRF is one of the primary humanitarian organizations in Palestine, delivering crucial and life-saving medical relief and humanitarian aid where it is needed most. With very little external aid being let into Gaza, any financial support for their work is critical to the survival of thousands without clean water, food, medical care, or shelter.
- United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and the Near East (UNRWA) 𖤓 www.unrwa.org
UNRWA is a UN agency that provides critical humanitarian assistance and contributes to the protection of refugees. Recent changes in international funding have severely impacted UNRWA’s operations in Gaza, most recently causing the suspension of life-sustaining food distributions in Rafah.
- Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) 𖤓 www.palestinercs.org
PRCS is a humanitarian organization that provides critical medical support in Gaza and the West Bank. They service hospitals and primary health care centers and provide emergency medicine and ambulance services.
- Save The Children 𖤓 www.savethechildren.org
Save the Children is a leading humanitarian organization supporting kids in crisis around the world. They are present in the West Bank and Gaza, providing essential services and support to Palestinian children impacted by the ongoing conflict since 1953. They have had a permanent presence in the occupied Palestinian territory since 1973.
- HEAL Palestine 𖤓 www.healpalestine.org
HEAL Palestine is on the ground in Gaza providing free medical care for sick and injured children. They also help provide education for children in need, support direct humanitarian aid such as food and shelter, and develop a leadership and mentorship program for affected youth.
- Operation Olive Branch 𖤓 www.linktr.ee/opolivebranch
Operation Olive Branch (OOB) is a volunteer-powered grassroots collective effort to connect with and amplify Palestinian voices and support their critical needs, which include but are not limited to their mutual aid requests. OOB has collected the mutual aid campaign information of over 800 families with hopes of enhancing families’ accessibility and reaching potential donors and advocates.
